Why does polypropylene FDY yarn feel relatively hard? Analyze the causes of this characteristic!

Polypropylene FDY filament (fully drawn filament) is a common synthetic fiber, widely used in the textile, industrial and other fields. Many people will find that when they come into contact with polypropylene FDY yarn, its hand feel is harder than that of ordinary polyester or nylon filament. So, why does polypropylene FDY filament have such characteristics?

1. The material properties of polypropylene itself

The molecular structure of polypropylene (polypropylene fiber) determines its high crystallinity and rigidity. Compared with polyester or nylon, the molecular chains of polypropylene are arranged more closely, resulting in a higher hardness of the fiber itself. In addition, polypropylene has extremely low moisture absorption and hardly absorbs water at all. This makes the fiber surface lack a soft and smooth feel, further enhancing its stiff hand feel.

2. The influence of the FDY process

The FDY (Fully Drawn filament) process enables polypropylene fibers to undergo high multiple stretching during the spinning process, with highly oriented molecular chains. This increases the strength and modulus of the fibers, but at the same time, it also reduces their softness. Because the polypropylene FDY yarn has reached a relatively high crystalline state during molding, the resilience of the fiber is weak and it feels harder to the touch.

3. There is less post-processing

Many chemical fiber products improve their hand feel through twisting, puffing or softener treatment, but polypropylene FDY yarn usually pays more attention to industrial uses such as strength and chemical resistance, and thus undergoes less softening treatment. This keeps the polypropylene FDY filament in a relatively original state and feels a bit hard to the touch.

4. The application scenarios determine its characteristics

Polypropylene FDY filament is often used in industrial textiles such as ropes, geotextiles, and filter materials. These applications place more emphasis on the strength and durability of the fibers rather than their softness. Therefore, its tough feature instead becomes an advantage.

The hand feel of polypropylene FDY filament is relatively hard, mainly due to the crystalline structure of the material itself, the high tensile ratio of the FDY process, and less softening treatment. Although it is not as soft to the touch as some chemical fibers, its high strength, corrosion resistance and other properties make it irreplaceable in the industrial field.
